Answer: Teak is a rot resistant , naturally high in oil content, closed grained hardwood containing silica. These qualities make teak the ideal wood for the shower or bathroom and it is used quite extensively in quality outdoor furniture because it is almost impervious to snow, rain and sunshine. No other hardwood, or oiled softwood for that matter, out performs teak in a bathing environment.
Answer: The first thing you want to investigate is the source of your teak. Plantation grown teak, especially from reclaimed ground, means the wood is grown and harvested from sustainable tree farms, not from old growth rain forests. Next you want teak wood that comes from trees at least 40 years old. This means substantial planning and silva culture, practiced by people like yourself, who are concerned about renewable resources and sustainable farming practices, not slash and burn farming as was practiced in the past. The suppliers of your teak shower seats, mats and accessories have a strict policy regarding size, quality and quantity of trees harvested and over plant strong seedlings to assure excellent survivability for many generations. Quality teak farming leads to a living forest attracting a variety of insects, birds and small mammals. You also want to look for either solid brass or stainless steel fasteners, not plated, as these are truly the only metals that are resistant to degradation in a moist environment such as your shower or bath.
Answer: All teak wood used to make the products for The Teak Shower Seat are kiln dried to lower the moisture content so the wood may be used in manufacturing usable finished products without warping, cracking or distortion. In the process of kiln drying some colors are accented in the grain and this is perfectly normal. As the wood ages the colors will darken when used indoors and would turn to a natural silver gray color if left outdoors exposed to UV light.
Answer: There are a number of cheaper hardwoods used for outdoor furniture and all of them are inferior to teak. Iroko is the most common of these woods, and does not have the same life expectancy as teak, let alone the same touch, feel or aesthetic quality. Teak furniture is not expensive when you relate the cost to its life expectancy. Teak has no comparison to any other wood for durability, beauty, strength and longevity under harsh conditions.
Answer: Simple answer...nothing. I would suspect that you are from a drier climate and while you were gone for two weeks the wood was no longer exposed to moisture from your shower so it is perfectly normal to see some small cracks in the end grain of wood, especially heavier wood cuts. These will naturally close as the wood is exposed to the moisture of a shower or bath and have no effect on the structural integrity of your bath furniture.
Answer: Teak is a natural product and, due to the nature of the wood, requires little maintenance. As It is not coated or covered with any varnish or painted products it will react to some spilled materials such as coffee or hair coloring. Care should be taken if the preservation of the natural looking wood is a concern. Other than that an annual or semi-annual scrubbing with a soft bristle brush and a non-detergent soap should be sufficient to keep your furniture piece in fine shape. Most drinks stains will wash out naturally with bathing or can be cleaned down with soapy water and a hard brush. Other damage or stains can be removed, once your furniture is dry, using ordinary sandpaper. The coarseness of sandpaper depends on the degree of damage or depth of the stain. Serious damage or staining requires you start with coarse sandpaper then medium then fine. Slight damage or a shallow stain will only require fine grade sandpaper using a light touch.
